How to make technical fabrics last

Most technical clothing doesn't wear out — it gets killed at home. The fibres that wick sweat and stretch through a workout are finer and more engineered than cotton, and the standard laundry routine grinds them down. A few small changes keep kit performing for years.
Wash cold, and wash less. Sweat rinses out at low temperatures; heat is what sets odor into synthetic fibres and breaks down elastane. A garment worn for one dry session often needs airing, not washing. When it does go in the machine, turn it inside out so the abrasion lands on the inside face.
Skip fabric softener entirely. Softener works by coating fibres, and that coating clogs the channels that move moisture — it's the single most common reason a wicking shirt starts feeling clammy. If your kit smells despite washing, a specialist sports detergent or a plain soak in diluted white vinegar does more than doubling the dose of regular detergent.
Dry on a line, not on a radiator and not in a hot dryer. Elastic recovers best at room temperature. Anything with a lamination or membrane — wind panels, water-resistant fronts — is especially heat-sensitive.
Zips and hook-and-loop are fabric killers in the drum. Close them before washing so they don't chew the knits tumbling around them. Wash compression garments in a mesh bag; the difference in stretch retention after fifty washes is visible.
Finally, rotate. Two mid-priced base layers worn alternately outlast one expensive one worn daily, because fibres need recovery time just like you do. Buy the second one before the first one dies and both will last longer than either would alone.
Storage matters almost as much as washing. Compression pieces and anything with heavy elastane should live folded, not on hangers — gravity is slow-motion stretching. And nothing technical goes into storage damp; the mildew smell that survives every subsequent wash usually started in a gym bag left sealed overnight.
Repairs are worth more than they cost. A flat-seam split or a pulled thumbhole is a five-minute fix that adds a season; most running shops know a mender even if they don't advertise one. Retire kit from performance duty when the function fails — a wicking shirt that no longer wicks makes a fine painting shirt — and you'll find the actual bin-day almost never comes.
The economics are simple: technical kit is priced for its function, and the function dies from heat, softener, and neglect faster than from miles. Care is the cheapest performance upgrade there is.
